Beginning in 2005, Jeremy Nickel embarked on a mission as homage to his father, Gil Nickel – to make elite Napa wines and generate donations toward cancer research (to which 10% of the profits from these wines go). Founded in Oakville, the land left to Jeremy in 2003 has led to this small-production brand, and Todd and I were fortunate enough to try them.
The Vineyard House Chardonnay 2015. Lemony with hints of stone fruit, honeysuckle and slight mineral undertones. Fleshy on the palate with creamy lemon curd and touches of butterscotch. It’s a pretty impressive Chardonnay.
The Vineyard House Cabernet Sauvignon 2011. Full-bodied, dense red. Loaded up with big, rich black fruits, oak spices, cocoa and tobacco notes. Quite sexy.
The Vineyard House Cabernet Sauvignon 2012. Big and bold, with layers of jammy blackberry and black currants, chocolate, espresso, crushed stones and more.
The Chardonnay and 2012 Cab were items not yet in the state, but these wines were all incredible. For the California wine fan, these would definitely be rock stars in their book, as they are ours.
