39 Champagnes and sparkling wines in all. All in an afternoon, and all for me. Well, okay, not just me – there were a lot of people there actually (I am not a total narcissist, I don’t think anyway).
I won’t bore you with all of my tasting notes but these were some of my favorites:
Pierre Peters Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru “Cuvée Reserve” NV. What can I say about this one aside from the fact this our go-to sparkler here at JJEG. Gorgeous. Pear and citrus notes abound with its lively white flower nose and a touch of creamy lemon mousse.
Doyard Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Non-Dose “Revolution” NV. Technically this is a biodynamic wine without the outright certification; they take a “non-dogmatic” approach to biodynamic farming. No dose means no dosage so this is Extra Brut level; bone dry. Its lean and crisp, loads of mineral, apple skin, white flower and Bartlett pear. Lovely.
Pierre Gimonnet Brut “Millesime de Collection” Chardonnay Vieilles Vignes 2005 (magnum). Simply beautiful. Creamy texture, copious amounts of stone fruits, mineral, toasted brioche. Liquid Neruda for the soul.
Marc Hebrart Extra Brut Grand Cru “Rive Gauche/Rive Droit” 2010. Exquisite. Extremely dry, the chalky, salty notes of pear skin, chayote and lime zest give way to fresh-baked brioche and Golden apple mousse.
Pehu-Simonet Brut Grand Cru “Selection Face Nord” NV. Great acidity emerges in the wash of luscious stone fruit, mineral and citrus notes. A very pretty, very alluring Champagne from one of my favorite producers.
Vilmart Brut Grand Cellier NV. Look, I love Krug, Ruinart, Salon and Pol Roger as much as the next nerd, but for me, give me Vilmart and I will be eternally grateful. A little bit yeasty, a little bit minerally, some lemon zest, Chinese Five Spice and Carolina bisquits, oh baby I love this wine.
Vilmart Brut Couer du Cuvée 2007. Cherry cream and oven-fresh sourdough, with a touch of lime zest, red apple skin and d’Anjou pear give this delicious sparkler so much character, I might punch somebody who tries to bogart the next glass of this – my desert island wine right here.
Bianca Vigna Prosecco Valdobbiadene DOCG NV. Prosecco can get a bad rap these days but there is nothing simpleton about this gorgeous Glera. Bright and lively with its easygoing, freewheeling mouthfeel and notes of citrus and stone fruit.
Egly-Ouriet Brut Rosé Grand Cru NV. Red flowers and raspberries with a touch of citrus shines through this glorious, slightly creamy sparkler. I really love this wine!
Huia Brut Blanc de Blancs 2010. Minerally, toasty sparkler from New Zealand, this 100% Chardonnay gives you hints of peach and apricot fruit, roasted almonds, fresh-baked bread and a touch of tangerine. A nice surprise!
Schloss Gobelsburg Brut Reserve NV. Riesling, Pinot Noir and Gruner Veltliner make up this bright, brilliant sparkler from Austria. Citrus peel, toasted nuts, stone fruit and a generous creamy mousse make for a truly enjoyable wine.
Brundlmayer Rosé Sekt NV. Pinot Noir, Zweigelt and St. Laurent comprise the blend here. Cherry, cassis and toasted almond notes reveal themselves in this sultry, shimmery Austrian sparkler. Definitely going off the beaten path here but its a voyage into the unknown that you are going to love.
