Happy Opening Day one and all – it’s finally baseball season! We Cincinnatians celebrate this day like it’s a national holiday and for good reason: the Cincinnati Reds are the oldest team in professional baseball, so it’s in our blood. Since the 1800’s we have kicked off the national baseball season with the annual Findlay Market opening day parade filled with festivities all over the city.

Jungle Jim’s Celebrates The “Real” Opening Day

Since the beginning, the Reds had the honor of opening the season for the league. Little by little, the MLB along with ESPN and other corporate influences have been trying to push opening day to the first Sunday in April. 1994 was the downfall, when MLB had the Reds play in the first ESPN Sunday Night Baseball Opening Game. Cincinnati wouldn’t allow the Reds to throw a parade before the game because of the time so, then owner Marge Schott, told Reds fans to treat the game like a regular exhibition game moving the Opening Day festivities to the next day on Monday, where it should be.

Ever since, other teams have been stealing the Opening Day thunder from us, but we all know the “real” opening day is today. No one does opening day like Cincinnati, and the Jungle has you covered for your opening day activities!
