Discoveries at the Jungle Beverage Month

Back to feed
Welcome to Discoveries at the Jungle, where each month we’ll take a look at some of the most interesting, flavorful and sometimes bizarre international items Jungle Jim’s has to offer. This month, we’re featuring beverages from around the world! So far this year we have focused on coffee, tea, snacks, pasta, candy, cookies, and condiments so if you missed those posts, make sure you go back and give them a read.

The world of beverages is certainly an interesting one. We, as humans, need to drink every day to survive. Of course water is always the best choice, but as long as history goes back there have been millions of ways people have been making their drinking a little more fun. From purification, to pasteurisation, juicing, infusing, carbonating, fermenting, distilling, mixing, and more, we have made a plethora of beverages that you probably wouldn’t have enough time in your life to even scratch the surface trying. This month we want to give you a small sample of non-alcoholic beverages from around the world that you might not typically find here in the US.

Shirakiku Ramune from Japan

Ramune means lemonade in Japanese, and first showed up in the 1800s when Alexander Sim introduced carbonated lemonade in Kobe. These drinks are widely known for their distinctive bottle, called codd neck, which uses a glass marble to seal the drink in with the pressure from the carbonation. To open the bottle you have to push the marble down to break the seal. These drinks are light in taste like a Sprite or 7-Up and come in over 40 flavors!

Did you know? Canned juices are usually an enriched product since the heat used in the processing destroys most of the vitamins. If the fruit juice is labeled cold-pressed, it is a higher quality product with most of its vitamin content intact.
