Lodi often gets a bad rap.  The workhorse of the California wine industry – which makes up a large portion of the Central Valley – Lodi is responsible for the lion’s share of wine production in the state.  (All-in-all, the Central Valley makes up 75% of total wine production in California).  Lodi wines can be a bit-too-much baked fruit, that kind of pie filling style that is sweet, jammy and over-the-top ripeness that’s very consumer-friendly but at times, somewhat one-dimensional.

Not so with Klinker Brick, a go-to Zinfandel house out of Lodi that overdelivers in QPR (quality-to-price ration).  Klinker Brick’s region sales manager, Jordan Painter dropped in recently with the entire roster of their terrific wines:

Klinker Brick Rosé 2015.  A dry rosé blend of Carignan, Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre that is light, racy and showing bright cherry and strawberry notes, hints of white pepper and spice, and finishing light and lively.

Klinker Brick Farrah’s Syrah 2014.  A beautiful expression of Syrah from Lodi.  Medium-bodied with bright red fruit, cocoa, earth and spice.  If people started out with this Syrah, a lot more people would be drinking Syrah.

Klinker Brick Old Vine Zinfandel 2014.  Pretty much textbook Lodi Zinfandel – dark berry jam, black pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, roasted figs and milk chocolate.

Klinker Brick Cabernet Sauvignon 2014.  Brand new for the Klinker Brick team, this medium-to-full-bodied red gives you black cherries, currant jam and Oolong tea leaves alongside mocha, leather and pencil shavings to give you a pretty solid Cab for the money.

Klinker Brick Zinfandel Old Ghost 2014.  Probably one of my all-time favorite Zinfandels, this quite regal with its deft handling of oak spice, bramble fruits, dark chocolate and hints of blackberry pie.  Certainly a candidate for a Top Ten Zin list!
