And Then There Were Three

Elixir Wine Group brings all the goodies.  I’ve been friends with Janine Poleman, our sales rep for Elixir for some time.  She’s like the Wonder Woman of the wine business, and the portfolio she represents has delivered some great wines to our doorstep.  And once again, with the introduction to Antech Limoux, a sparkling wine producer from the Languedoc, she does it again.

Recently, she and local wine rock star, our dear friend Stacey Meyer (of Heidelberg Distributing) suggested a visit from Françoise Antech-Gazeau, winemaker for Antech Limoux.  These two women, I must confess, have a remarkable knack for turning me into jelly with a whisper, so expectedly, I said, “yes.”

I have to say, the wines that Françoise and her team turn out are remarkable wines.  And they are steals in relation to the competition.  Gorgeous sparkling wines from Southern France that are made in the same quality and care as Champagne, and come in of equal price or lower than Prosecco.

We had a small group in the cellar, who were lucky enough to hang out with Françoise, and listen to her tell the tale of Languedoc, Limoux, and her lovely wines, of which there were three:

Antech Brut Tradition NV.  Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Mauzac, this light, crisp and refreshing sparkler gives you green apple mousse, hints of mineral, stone fruit and a touch of almond.

Antech Brut Cuveé Eugenie 2014.  Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Mauzac again.  Creamy, yeasty notes of fresh-baked brioche with hints of Golden Delicious apples, Bartlett pear, honeycomb and white flowers.

Antech Brut Rosé 2014.  Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Mauzac and Pinot Noir.  This was the star of the show, with its crisp, vibrant notes of apples and cherries, hyacinth, freesia, mineral and red berry mousse.  Delicious!

Afterward, Stacey and I helped Françoise find a good American burger and tried to tell her the many famous people of Cincinnati.  William Howard Taft.  Rutherford B. Hayes.  Doris Day.  Jerry Springer.  It’s times like these I wish I was better at French than simply to say “Avez-vous des Bourbon Whiskey?”, “J’ai la gueule de bois.”, or “Ne mangez pas le papier parce que c’est mauvais pour vous.”  But it is in moments like those that one learns to stop and really listen to the stories being told.  The details that you lose when you are in a hurry and not entirely vested in the moment.  I’m getting better at those.  And Françoise joins an elite group of women who captivate my weary soul, and drag me, bewilderedly, toward a sunnier disposition.

Cheers ladies!  And thank you Françoise for spending time with us here in Cincinnati!
