This part week, we had a visit from Van Duzer, a great producer out of Oregon’s Willamette Valley.  This winery was always a bit difficult to find in my other life across the river, so it’s good to know they are more than within our grasps here in Ohio.

Founded in 1998 in and around the foothills at the mouth of the Van Duzer Corridor (rumor has it the newest AVA in Oregon), the winemaking is led by Burgundian winemaker Florent-Laurent Merlier, who brings a French sensibility to Oregon, and it shows in the elegance of their wines.

Van Duzer Riesling 2013.  A very Alsatian-style Riesling, dry with hints of petrol, mint and lime zest.  Glycerol on the palate, with a touch of green apple and finishing with mineral and well-balanced acidity.

Van Duzer Pinot Gris 2015.  Lots of tropical fruits, tethered by white flower, cantaloupe and Chinese Five Spice.

Van Duzer “Smith & Perry” Pinot Noir 2015.  Brand new for Van Duzer, this under $20 Pinot Noir is pretty impressive.  Showing off red fruit, fresh flowers and hints of vanilla bean and oak spice.

Van Duzer Pinot Noir 2014.  Richer than the Smith & Perry, this medium-bodied red has dark red fruits, licorice, black pepper, turned earth and cola nut notes.
