  • Cline, Cline, Everywhere Some Cline

When it comes to consistency and quality, few wineries can be thought more reliable than Cline Cellars from California.  Recently, we got a visit from old friend Keith Morris, VP of National Sales for the brand, and Todd and I ran the gamut of their wares.

For those who don’t know Cline, this sustainably-farmed, family-owned winery has been operating since 1982, headed by winemaker Charlie Tsegeletos and assistant winemaker Tom Gendell.

  • Inamorata, Her Name Is Sake

Saké.  This slightly mysterious and formidable beverage is often misunderstood to most American consumers.  The name itself springs to mind visions of Japanese Hibachi steak houses with carafés of hot, weird-beverages that give your insides a cozy place by the fire, but the subsequent drunk is excessively harsh.  Yet as I become more-and-more fascinated by this beverage, the more I come to understand how intricate, how pairable, how incredible it is.  And while my love affair is still gestating,

Borrowing from a song from one of my favorite bands (Big Wreck BTW), we met up with Chris Thomas from Vineyard Brands, who brought us a Whino’s dozen of wines to try (13)!  Vineyard Brands is a great portfolio of wines from all over the world, including France, South Africa and South America.

    Check out this heavy lineup:

Hamilton Russell Chardonnay Cape South Coast 2016.  Far-and-away the best producer of Chardonnay in South Africa,

In this business, you meet a lot of people.  And given this funny little blog, I’d be remiss if I didn’t recall to you my friends the day we welcomed Christof Höpler and his lovely wife Louise from Weingut Höpler of Austria.

The funny thing about Austrian wines is that often consumers get Austrian and German wines confused, assuming that because of proximity perhaps, they are one in the same, and many times they believe Austrian wines to be sweet.

Bodegas LAN, a winery nestled in Spain’s Rioja region, was founded in 1972 and it derives its name from the three provinces that make up the Rioja D.O.Ca. – Logroño (currently a part of La Rioja), Alvana and Navarra.  Not long ago, we had John Perry, export manager of Rioja’s Bodegas LAN drop in at Eastgate, and we tasted through some of their wares:

Duquesa de Valladolid Verdejo Rueda 2015.  Bright,

  • It’s Such A Small World After All

Recently, we were introduced to our new Indigenous Selections rep, and like always, this business of ours is indeed a small world.  Our friend David DuBou arrived, still settling into his new gig, with some great wines in tow.

I got to work with David briefly during my time in Louisville with another company as was he, and it was cool to see him again, in a brand new capacity, slinging Italian wines (of which we are wholeheartedly enamored here at Jungle Jim’s Eastgate).

Jungle Jim’s International Market.  For the wine department, it’s almost obligatory that we bring you wines from all over the world.  It’s what we do.  We are a mecca for nationalities from everywhere who work and live here in the Tri-State, and it’s always a treat to meet winemakers and luminaries from places you might not often think of when it comes to wine,

So the crux of this business is above all else to sell wine.  If we just amass a big inventory and nobody is buying, then rest assured we are quickly out of a job.  Yet the balancing act is to find wines that the masses will love and subsequently buy.  To borrow a phrase from a wine retailer friend of mine, you could call it The Wineslinger Paradigm.

As buyers we certainly get wined-and-dined,

  • The After Festival Festival Festivities

So the Cincinnati International Wine Festival came and went, and while it all tends to be a whirlwind when it comes to town, the event I have unfortunately always missed was the little shindig our friends at Cutting Edge Selections throws at the warehouse right after the CIWF Trade tasting.

So let me explain just a little bit.  Cutting Edge Selections is a local wholesaler that’s been around as long as I can remember,
