Discoveries at the Jungle Coffee Month: Bru and Tortuga

Back to feed

Coffee has been around since the 9th or 10th century and is now the second most traded commodity in the world, just behind oil. The worldwide production of coffee is at 8.9 million tonnes a year with Brazil, Vietnam, and Indonesia being the top three producers. Even though there are only two types of coffee beans, Arabica and Robusta, each region and roasting technique brings out different, complex flavors. Jungle Jim’s International Market carries an endless variety of coffee from around the world. Join us this month as we feature a few of our favorites!

Bru – India

Bru Coffee opened in 1968 and is now India’s largest coffee brand, offering a wide range of Indian and international coffee products.

Bru is a coffee mix similar to instant coffee and tastes very rich and chocolatey. You’ve never tasted anything like this before.

Did you know: The word “coffee” is from the Arabic qahwah, which is thought to have meant “wine.” The Turkish word for coffee, kahve, is derived from the Arabic word and is related to the word café. Other scholars believe the word is from Kaffa, a region in Ethiopia where coffee is thought to have originated.

Tortuga – Cayman Islands, British West Indies

You may be familiar with Tortuga because of their world famous rum cakes, but they make coffee, too! The company got its start in 1987 when a husband and wife that worked for Cayman Airways started a duty free rum selling business. As the company grew and the popularity of their rum cakes exploded, they started branching out to other products such as coffee.

We carry a wide array of Tortuga coffee. The classic blend is very mellow, but full flavored. It’s definitely an easy drinking coffee. If you want to be adventurous try one of their other offerings!

Did you know: The most expensive coffee in the world is Indonesia’s Kopi Luwak or civet coffee. It is made from coffee beans that have been eaten, partially digested, and then excreted by a weasel-like animal called the Asian palm civet. These beans sell for more than $600 a pound, or $50 a cup.
