Discoveries at the Jungle: Favorit Preserves from Switzerland and Casa Giulia Preserves from Italy

Back to feed

While we might have simplified the theme this month to just jams and jellies, we’re really talking about the whole world of fruit preserves, which encompasses jams, jellies, chutney, curds, spreads, and more! Fruit preserves are preparations of fruits, vegetables, and sugars that are canned or sealed for long term use. The different styles of ingredients, fruits, and vegetables in preserves determines which category they fall under.

The origin of fruit preserves are a little cloudy. Some say humans started preserving fruit around the 1st to the 4th century AD. Although, we didn’t see similar styles of preserves that we see today until Napoleon offered a reward to help feed his armies by preserving food easily – in 1785. From there we started seeing different styles of preserves such as jams, jellies, marmalades, and more!

Let’s sit back and discover fruit preserves from around the world, and hey, maybe even learn a little more about them in the process!

Did you know? A chutney is a spiced jam. This tangy Indian condiment is made from fruit (mango is a classic), sugar, vinegar, and spices, and ranges in heat from mild to hot. Chutneys are great with curries, but are also a flavorful, fat-free way to enhance any roast meat, spice up a turkey sandwich, or add punch to your bagel.

Casa Giulia Preserves – Italy

Founded in 1883 by Hossein Bnejad, these preserves are made with an innovative manufacturing technique which allows maximum extraction of fruit. The recipes are from the Abruzzo Region of Italy and are made with strawberries, cherries, blueberries, raspberries, plums, figs, grapes, lemons, and wildberries.

Did you know? A conserve, or whole fruit jam, is a jam made of fruit stewed in sugar. Traditional whole fruit preserves are particularly popular in Eastern Europe (Russia, Ukraine, Belarus) where they are called varenye, the Baltic region where they’re known by a native name in each of the countries, as well as in many regions of Western, Central and Southern Asia, where they are referred to as murabba.
