French wine. Someone had asked me about a particular wine, and the note they gave, albeit rife with misspellings, I knew right away what it was. And I found myself, as I am prone to do, in giving a kind-of mini-lecture on the subject. I feel sometimes like I can sound a bit William Shatner, although a more slightly inebriated and hallucinating version of the actor, delivering my minilecture as if recreating a scene from Mr. Shatner’s Kingdom of the Spiders. (Sometimes I feel like my previous life of trying to be a rock star has finally caught up to me and I struggle to find the right word, like walking after riding a roller coaster five times).
Yet I digress.
Our friend Laura Landoll from Vintage Wine’s Grand Cru division, dropped in recently with David Launay, Commercial Director for CA Grand Crus, and we got to try the wines of Chateau Meyney along with a few others from Aquataine Wine Company.
Le Sec de Rayne Vigneau Bordeaux Blanc 2015. 100% Sauvignon Blanc, this tasty white Bordeaux from Sauternes producer Chateau de Rayne Vigneau gives you crisp, light, vibrant citrus, hawthorn and mineral notes. A delicious, dry white wine perfect for summer.
Villaviva Rosé Cotes de Thau 2016. 100% Carignan. Hailing from the as-yet-undiscovered region of the Cotes de Thau, which sits right along the Mediterranean coast, this pretty, bright and dry rosé shows off fresh strawberry, red flowers, mineral and a touch of sea salt for a refreshing, thirst-quencing blush perfect for sipping on the back porch.
Chateau Blaignan Grand Vin de Bordeaux Rouge 2012. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. A hearty, medium-bodied red Bordeaux that delivers a lot of value. Black fruit, pepper, tobacco and cedar notes abound.
La Chapelle de Meyney Saint-Estephe 2010. 56% Cabernet Sauvignon and 44% Merlot. Blackberries, plum, anise, tobacco and cedar notes rise up and walk you through a medium-to-full-bodied, well-integrated, multilayered finish. Incredible Left-Bank red.
Chateau Tournefeuille Lalande-de-Pomerol 2014. 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. Remarkable red from the Right Bank. Gorgeous blue and black fruits, pepper, crushed stones and crushed violets.
Chateau Meyney Saint-Estephe 2009. Exquisite red. 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 15% Petit Verdot. Earthy, full-bodied Bordeaux with nuanced black currant and plum notes, hints of cedar, mineral and damp earth, and finishing wonderfully.
I’ve. Gotta. Say. Bordeaux wines. Are. My favorite.
Yet I digress.
