Happy St. Patrick’s Day from Jungle Jim’s International Market! When you think of St. Patrick’s day your mind may wander to green beer, green outfits and fun parties around town, but there is much, much more behind the holiday.

Who is Saint Patrick?

The reason we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17 is that it’s the day Saint Patrick passed away, sometime during 385-461 AD. Patrick was a bishop in Ireland, his father was a deacon and his grandfather was a priest. At the age of 16 he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and forced into slavery. 

He spent six years working as a shepherd where he “found God.” Patrick says God told him to flee to the coast where a ship would be waiting to take him home. He escaped and decided to become a priest. According to the legend Patrick returned to Ireland to convert the pagan Irish to Christianity. He spent many years on this quest converting thousands of people. 

Why We Celebrate

St. Patrick’s Day is a deeply rooted tradition in Ireland as a day to feast during Lent in honor of Saint Patrick. St. Patrick’s Day as we know it started in 1762, with the first St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York City. The parade was organized by Irish immigrants to help remind them of home, as well as to honor Saint Patrick. The day was filled with beer and Irish foods, which has become a tradition today.
Shamrocks and the color green are used to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day because he used the three leafed plant to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish. Green has been a color associated with Ireland for hundreds of years, and is part of the Green Harp Flag used by the Irish Catholic Confederation. Little by little, green became the color for Irish nationalism. Because of this, green has become the color of St. Patrick’s Day.
