Moments in life that define you tend to sneak up on you, never really letting you know they are on the way. It’s just BAM! And they are here. While I’ve been anticipating this impending voyage, it really hasn’t sunk in yet.
For those of you who don’t know me personally, I had been a singer in a rock ‘n’ roll band in a previous life, and after 20 years, I am doing it again. It’s just a studio project but it’s a pretty big deal to me. Music has been part of my life as long as I can remember, and when I left it professionally, wine has become something of a surrogate for me.
I’m not leaving here mind you. And no this is not part of some existential mid-life crisis or anything. I just want to know I can still do it. Think of it as one last ride. I have no idea what will happen with this thing, but it’s more than a little cool to know there are folks who still believe I can. And maybe that’s all any of us really need, someone to believe in who we are and what we are capable of doing.
Hell, it certainly couldn’t hurt these days, right?
Moments in life that inspire you are equally as unexpected. Wine has always represented that to me, like the first time I tried Chateau d’Yquem. Or Salon. Or Domaine Romanee-Conti. Those wines leave a mark on your soul. And one that is fast becoming every bit as special is Continuum, the Napa Valley flagship red from Tim Mondavi. This Bordeaux-style red has become one of Napa’s most prestigious collectibles, and each vintage is quite the privilege for a retailer like myself to try.
Continuum Red Napa Valley 2014. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot is really exquisite, with notes of crushed violets, blackberry and cedar first emerging in the nose, followed by loads of dark chocolate, black currant, anise, sage, black pepper and dark plums. Here you have a beauty of a wine, an enchantress, that weaves a mystery upon the palate and reveals only little bits over time until the very end, when you will find you are completely under her spell. Or something like that.
