Chaos Theory is a branch of mathematics focused on the behavior of dynamical systems that are highly sensitive to initial conditions. ‘Chaos’ is an interdisciplinary theory stating that within the apparent randomness of chaotic complex systems, there are underlying patterns, constant feedback loops, repetition, self-similarity, fractals, self-organization, and reliance on programming at the initial point known as sensitive dependence on initial conditions. – Wikipedia.

If there is one thing you learn in the wine business, it is dispelling the self-arrogant belief that you can circumnavigate the permeating chaos of this industry.  I know, a bit weighty of a comment for something so fluffy as this wine blog, but these are the ongoing lessons one learns in this business.  Those unbeholden to ego learn right away, you’re just along for the ride.

I’ve been accumulating life lessons by the dozens these last few months, things that have started reshaping my perspective, and if there is one thing I’ve learned, it’s that I haven’t really learned anything.  Life is messy, complicated and at times disillusioning.  Yet beneath all that morbidity there is a beauty that emerges, like the sun poking through those black clouds after a storm.  The warmth of those rays after a cold, blustering rain can remind you there is purpose in the chaos.  It’s almost revelatory.

A recent visit from the Hess family sales team delivered wines contrary to the aforementioned chaos, exceptional wines that are a welcome diversion from these uncertain times.

Hess Collection Chardonnay Napa Valley 2015.  Lightly oaked, this clean, crisp Chardonnay gives you green apple and d’Anjou pear notes with hints of mineral and allspice.

Hess Collection Chardonnay The Lioness 2015.  Aromas of stone fruit with vanilla custard, toasted marshmallow and butterscotch emerge in this full-bodied Chardonnay.

Hess Collection Cabernet Sauvignon The Lion 2014.  Robust, multi-layered red with notes of dark fruits, cigar box, sage, chocolate and baking spices.  17% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot round out the blend.

Hess Collection Cabernet Sauvignon Mount Veeder Grown 2012.  Full-bodied, rich and decadent with lots of blackberry pie, crushed violets, tobacco, leather and spice.

Hess Collection Cabernet Sauvignon Allomi 2014.  Blended with Petite Sirah, Malbec and Petit Verdot, this bold red is unctuous notes of black currant, blackberry, blueberry, dried herbs, leather, dark chocolate and vanillin oak.

MacPhail Pinot Noir Mardikian 2014.  This is a big, big Pinot Noir.  Rich and full-bodied, the focus word is POWER.  Nothing subtle about this, yet it is a beautifully-executed red nonetheless.

Colomé Altura Máxima Malbec Salta 2014.  A powerful Malbec, one of which has few equals, this wine is exceptional with its smoky plum and blue fruits, hints of smoked meats, vanillin oak and roasted herbs.
