Not too often you get to try out 5 vintages of Napa Cab in one fell swoop, but such is the case for me and a vertical of Andrew Geoffrey Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon.  Now I admit I haven’t really been all that familiar with Andrew Geoffrey wines so I rooted around the Internets and did my due diligence.

Andrew Geoffrey Vineyards began in 1973 in the Diamond Mountain sub-region of Napa, up in the Mayacamas Mountains.  Focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the winery excels in bold, mountain fruit, making really good, deeply concentrated reds.

We tried 5 vintages of this humble Cab:

Andrew Geoffrey Cabernet Sauvignon 2005.  Shows off some deep black fruits, cedar and spice notes, with hints of licorice, tobacco and cocoa.  Still pretty expressive.

Andrew Geoffrey Cabernet Sauvignon 2006.  Surprisingly bold with some good grip.  Its silken in its smoothness with milk chocolate and lead pencil shavings, with touches of pepper and spice.

Andrew Geoffrey Cabernet Sauvignon 2007.  Again, I was surprised by the depth and concentration still remaining.  Lots of black fruit still lingering, with cedar, tobacco and smoke showing up in the mix as well.

Andrew Geoffrey Cabernet Sauvignon 2011.  Lots of smoky blackberry and cedar notes, with a hint of cigar, mocha, and oak spices.  Pretty layered black currant and boysenberry notes as well.

Andrew Geoffrey Cabernet Sauvignon 2012.  Big, bold, concentrated black fruits, smoke and mineral.  You see a sense of style run through all these vintages, and the power is nuanced, more tectonic than brutish.

These are pretty refined across the board.  This is definitely a producer I won’t be able to ignore, and you shouldn’t either.
