The Kids’ Corner – August 2021

Back to feed

Welcome to The Kids' Corner!

Parents tend to have a few run-ins with picky eaters. For this reason, we’ve created The Kids Corner: products for kids and reviewed by kids! We hope these suggestions may ease some tension when walking down the aisles; after all, it’s a Jungle out there!

Fresh Peaches

These fuzzy summer staples are a member of the rose family and originated in China. The peach’s scientific name, Prunus persica, directly references the fruit’s travels to Persia along the Silk Road. The two types of peaches are clingstone (the flesh sticks to the stone) and freestone (the stone is easily separated from the flesh). A large peach has fewer than 70 calories and contains 3 grams of fiber. It’s also a good source of vitamins A and C, making it a perfect, light snack for a summer day. You can find them in our Produce Department.

Dried Mango

As one of the sweetest fruits, mango can be just as delicious as candy. Fortunately, it offers far more nutrients. Mango is an excellent snack in fresh form but becomes even sweeter and more convenient when dried. This south-Asian staple is available worldwide and used in several medicinal applications. Dried mango provides a potent dose of antioxidants, as well as vitamin A, calcium, iron, and potassium. Please find it in our Natural Foods Department.

Sushi

Traditionally designed to be a quick street-side snack, sushi quickly became a Southeast Asian delicacy. Sushi, as we know it, was introduced in Japan in the mid-1800s, eventually finding its way to Los Angeles, California, by the 1970s. You can find our Sushi Department near our new expansion!

Corn on the Cob

Corn is a delicious and nutritious staple food. It is the world’s most popular food crop, along with rice and wheat. However, most of the world’s corn crop doesn’t end up on your dinner plate; it’s
primarily used for animal consumption, the production of corn ethanol, and other corn products such as corn oil, corn syrup, and corn starch. Corn is a powerhouse of nutrients, including fiber, vitamin C, thiamine, folate, magnesium, and potassium. Also, one cup of sweet yellow corn packs 5.4 grams of protein and almost twice as many antioxidants as an apple! Find corn in our Produce Department.
