The Times They Are A-Changin’

I used to have this professor in college, Professor Twe was his name.  It was an Intro Psychology class if I remember right, and he used to always say, “motion is Life, stagnation is Death.”  I would often repeat it to myself as if each day was some sort of unforeseen lesson and saying that mantra out loud would somehow redirect my energies and I would push forward, despite whatever mess I was languishing in, and no matter the lack of movement of which I displayed.

Talk about falling on deaf ears.

However those words resonate like echoes bouncing off the canyon walls, rising up from the chasm and into the heavens.  It took me long enough, Professor, but I think I finally heard you.

Moving forward.  Change.  The adaptation of one’s self into a world of hyperfluidity.  I may still be a mess at times (aren’t we all at times?), but onward, I am forever pressing onward.  Change happens each and every second of every moment in each of our life’s and to deny it or resist it is to resist Life itself.  (Life lessons in a wine blog I know, right?) The point I guess I am reaching for is that change is good, resisting said change is where everything goes south.

Speaking of change, recently the torch was passed at Marietta Cellars in California from father to son, and the changes have been noticeable, from the label to the specifics of the wines.  Nothing has diminished, more clarity and focus has transpired, and the wines are better than ever.

Marietta Old Vine Red California NV.  Primarily Zinfandel this field blend is what everyday wine drinkers are searching for: up-front fruit, vibrant flavors, a supple finish and of course, easy on the pocketbook.  Sweet tobacco, red and purple fruit and red flowers abound.  One to buy by the case!

Marietta Zinfandel Román 2015.  Blended with a bit of Barbera and Petite Sirah, this excellent Zinfandel gives you black fruits, plums and hints of cumin, turmeric and cinnamon.  A pretty delicious Zin for Zin-lovers and non-Zin-lovers alike.

Marietta Cabernet Sauvignon Armé 2014.  Blended with Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot, this formerly non-vintage red is one of several changes at Marietta Cellars.  Licorice, blackberry pie, hints of cocoa nibs, charcoal and espresso beans show up in this full-bodied red.

Marietta Red Blend Cristo 2014.  A trip to the Rhone in your glass with this blend of Syrah, Grenache, Petite Sirah and Viognier.  Medium-to-full-bodied, spicy red and blue fruits, with a touch of Chinese Five Spice, sassafrass and cloves.

Marietta Zinfandel Angeli Alexander Valley 2015.  Fruit cake and red fruits with a touch of blackberry cobbler, turnt earth and dried herbs leap from the glass as this tasty red opens up.  A terrific Zinfandel!

Marietta Cabernet Sauvignon Game Trail Yorkville Highlands 2014. The debut of this incredible, multi-layered Cab, showing off exotic spices and dried herbs, loads of black currant and blackberry preserves, dark roast coffee and superb minerality.

Marietta Syrah Gibson Block McDowell Valley 2014.  Black and red currant jam, bacon fat and roasted herbs shine in this slight homage to the Northern Rhone.  A superb Syrah, this is medium-to-full-bodied, earthy yet showing unctuous, spicy, reductive dark berry notes.
