Recently we hosted a tasting in our Eastgate wine cellar with Alfredo Arribas, owner and winemaker of Portal del Priorat, a great new producer from Spain and a new addition to the portfolio of Elixir Wine Group.  Our good friend from Elixir – Janine Poleman – was also on hand to show off a few other terrific wines from the book, including wines from Portugal, Chile and Argentina.

Dubbed Latin Night in the Cellar, we settled into a low-lit few hours with great wine and good conversation, a little bit of Buena Vista Social Club playing in the background.

But the showcase was undoubtedly Priorat, a D.O.Q. (Denominacio d’Origen Qualificada), and the wines of Portal del Priorat:

Portal del Priorat Gotes Blanques 2015.  100% Grenache Blanc.  This is bright, vibrant and glowing with white peach and orchard fruit notes, hints of white flowers, a bit of blanched almonds and a touch of light spices.

Portal del Priorat Ediciones i Limitada Luno Montsant 2013.  Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignan.  Impressive red with earthy notes of dried cherries and plums, mineral and cedar.  Bright acidity really sets it apart.

Portal del Priorat Gotes del Priorat 2014.  Grenache and Carignan.  Hints of black cherry, sassafrass, crushed stones and violets are highlighted in this medium-bodied beauty.

Clos del Portal Negre de Negres 2014.  Grenache, Carignan and Syrah.  Firm, plump tannins hold fast for layer after layer of dark fruits, cloves, cigar box, nutmeg and turned earth.

Clos del Portal Somni 2014.  Carignan and Syrah.  Bold and spicy red with deep, layered red and blue fruits, dried herbs, sage and umami.  Dense and rich, the finish goes on and on and on.

Clos del Portal Tros de Clos 2015.  100% old vine Carignan.  Densely layered notes of dark cherries, plum and mulberries, with wild mushroom, mineral and dried herbs.  This is a gorgeous, gorgeous wine.

While we have done a few cellar events in the past, this was one event that seemed more well-received from the outset.  Our customers all enjoyed the wines and the company immensely, a great evening had by all.  These wines more than earned a spot on our shelves, and we look forward to working with Alfredo and his wines again.
