The Zodiac Story

According to legend, the Jade Emperor needed to choose 12 animals to serve as his palace guards. It was a great honor to be chosen by the Jade Emperor, so all sorts of animals raced to the palace as fast as they could. In first place was the rat.

Rat had promised to go with Cat, who was Rat’s best friend and accomplice. Together, Rat and Cat had hatched a plan to ride Ox to the finish line, which was just past a deep and dangerous river. When the time came, they stealthily climbed aboard Ox’s back and held on as Ox raced to the Jade Emperor and forded the swift-coursing river. However, when they were halfway across the river and almost to the finish line, Rat sabotaged Cat and pushed Cat into the water! Ox and Rat continued to the shore, then, at the last second, Rat jumped from Ox’s back and crossed the finish line first. Ox came in second place, while Cat fell behind and. Ever since that incident, cats have always feared and hated water and have always chased rats and mice.

After Ox was Tiger. Tiger was fast and strong, but when crossing the river, Tiger’s fur became wet and heavy, which is why Tiger was not able to beat Ox.

Rabbit came in fourth place. Rabbit was extraordinarily fast and quick but had difficulties crossing the river. Rabbit was only able to make it across because, by a stroke of luck, a stray log drifted past and carried him to the opposite bank.

Dragon arrived after Rabbit. Though Dragon was strong and swift, he was also generous of heart. While flying to the Jade Emperor, he had noticed a village on fire. Without a second thought, Dragon had paused to help the villagers put out the fire. He had also noticed a small rabbit struggling to cross a river on a log, so he paused to use his strong breath to create a gust of wind that steered the little bunny to safety. Thus, Dragon was late and took fifth place.

Next, Horse approached, quickly crossing the river. However, at the last second, Snake slithered between Horse’s legs, spooking Horse. Thoroughly shaken, Horse hesitated and Snake slid over the finish line, claiming sixth place. Horse crossed to take seventh place.

Next came Goat, Monkey, and Rooster. These three animals had teamed up make it across the finish line. Rooster had found an abandoned raft on the bank of the river, which the three contestants used to cross the rushing water and make it to the other side. Once they arrived at the finish line, Monkey and Rooster courteously allowed Goat to cross first, giving him the eighth place in the zodiac. Monkey took ninth place while Rooster crossed tenth.

Finally, Dog appeared in the river, and the animals watched as he swam across to the finish line to claim the eleventh spot in the zodiac. The Jade Emperor was confused at Dog’s tardiness and asked why Dog had taken so long. Dog replied that it had been so long since he had taken a bath, that when he waded into the river, he couldn’t help frolicking in the clean, cool water.

Almost all of the animals had arrived, but there was still one spot remaining. The Jade Emperor watched as the final animal appeared on the horizon, moving surprisingly quickly. As the animal approached the river and climbed the bank to the finish line, they saw that Pig had arrived! Pig would have been earlier, but couldn’t resist stopping along the way to have a snack. Pig fell behind, but still became the twelfth animal of the zodiac.

You are exactly correct about how I am and how I shop at JJ. An example of what I do; while I was in the natural food section a nice lady asked if I knew where the resttooms, I started to explain hut it was just easier to take the time and walk her to the restrooms. On the way I explained that she will not really be going into a pot-a-let, that the restroom is very nice once inside. It turned out this was her second day in the United States and that she was from China here for work and was told that she could find all her native foods at JJ. I told her that sh will find a lot if not everything she needs. I am a big supporter of JJ. Thank you for your wonderful store.

That’s awesome! We are touched to hear that you were able to make a stranger feel welcome in our store and in our country. Thank you so much for sharing! <3
