What are pomegranates?

Pomegranates come from a small fruit bearing tree or shrub that originated in the modern day region of Iran, which were grown all the way to modern day India. Pomegranates have been cultivated since ancient times through the Mediterranean region, but have spread through Spain, the Middle East, Africa, Korea, Japan, and, eventually, the United States.
The fruit itself is somewhere in between a lemon and a grapefruit in size. You don’t actually eat the whole fruit, you eat the seeds, which are surrounded by a pulpy liquid. The seed coating will range from a deep red to a purple color and has a similar shape to a corn kernel. They are super juicy and can be very messy, so be careful when snacking on these delicious fruits!

How do you prepare pomegranates?

To open the pomegranate you can cut it with a knife or score it before splitting it open. Separate the seeds from the pulp by hand or use a spoon or knife. If you freeze it the seeds will come out a little easier and it will be less messy overall. Or take a look at the video above for an even easier way!

New Discovery Box!
