Discoveries at the Jungle Cookie Month!

Welcome to Discoveries at the Jungle, where each month we’ll take a look at some of the most interesting, flavorful and sometimes bizarre international items Jungle Jim’s has to offer. This month, we’re featuring cookies from around the world! So far this year we have focused on coffee, tea, snacks, pasta and candy, so if you missed those posts, make sure you go back and give them a read.

Cookies, crisps, biscuits, wafers, buns, etc. Depending on what part of the world you reside, these are all the same thing. Different countries and cultures have their own cookie styles, but all we know is they are all delicious. This month we are taking you on a cookie journey around the globe to show you the best that the world has to offer!

Cookie-like wafers have existed for as long as baking has been documented, because they are great for bringing along while traveling. But those wafers were not usually sweet and not really a “cookie” as we would classify it today. Once sugar become a little more common, around the 7th century, people started combining it with “travel cakes” we mentioned to make them sweeter and more desirable. Cookies as we know it – cream, butter and sugar cookies – didn’t really come into existence until around the 18th century.

Jules Destrooper got his start selling goods from far away lands in Belgium. His best selling product were razor thin almond thins flavored with exotic spices from around the world. A hotel owner in town would make biscuits with these almonds, which then became an instant hit. Jules quickly started making these biscuits and expanded his selection. Now, 130 years later, you can try the same tasty biscuits! We have the almond, butter and ginger varieties!
