Discoveries at the Jungle – Rosamonte Yerba Mate and Caribbean Dreams Jamaican Sorrel Tea

Back to feed
Tea has an ancient and rich history that spans from the 3rd century AD and reaches across the globe. Tea originated in China, but it has traveled and morphed across borders since it’s beginnings. There are a plethora of teas available today, from all corners of the world, and Jungle Jim’s International Market carries an increasingly wide variety from all over. So let’s take a little time this month to talk about tea from all over the world that we offer right here in your own backyard!

Did you know?  The tea bag was invented in 1908 in the United States by accident. Thomas Sullivan used small silk bags to hand out samples of his tea and people thought they were just supposed to put them directly into the tea pot like a metal infuser instead of being emptied out.

Today we have two more teas for you to check out! One is Rosamonte Yerba Mate from Argentina, the other is Caribbean Dreams Jamaican Sorrel Tea (from Jamaica, of course). Let’s dive in!
Jamaican Sorrel Tea – The Caribbean Sorrel is very tart, similar to a green apple, but the added ginger mellows it out and sweetens the tea a bit. This particular tea has been exported from Jamaica since 2012. Health benefits include: improved eyesight, strengthened immune system, strengthened bones, increased circulation and energy and it possibly helps in preventing cancer.

Did you know?  For centuries tea was only used for medicinal purposes. It took almost 3000 years for it to become an everyday drink.

Rosamonte Yerba Mate – This tea is made from Mate leaves and stems, which gives it a smooth, smoky flavor. It’s rather strong, so most people blend it with other herbs or sweeten it with sugar or honey. This particular tea is made with holly, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor – which means this tea is an antidepressant. So there’s a good reason to keep holly hanging around!

Yerba Mate requires some special preparation techniques you can learn more here.

Did you know?  In ancient China tea was a form of currency. Leaves were pressed out and scored so that change could be made if necessary.
