Discoveries at the Jungle –  Wagh Bakri and Caykur Filiz Cayi Tea

Back to feed
Tea has an ancient and rich history that spans from the 3rd century AD and reaches across the globe. Tea originated in China, but it has traveled and morphed across borders since it’s beginnings. There are a plethora of teas available today, from all corners of the world, and Jungle Jim’s International Market carries an increasingly wide variety from all over. So let’s take a little time this month to talk about tea from all over the world that we offer right here in your own backyard!

Did you know? Black tea is made by fermenting the leaves and then heating them up to remove the moisture. This is what turns the leaves black.

Today we are pressing on our great tea journey here on Adventures at the Jungle. We have selected Wagh Bakri from India and Caykur Feliz Cayi from Turkey.

Wagh Bakri – Dating back to 1892, Shri Narandas Desa purchased 500 acres of tea estate in South Africa. Not long after his start, racial discrimination forced him back to India with only a few belongings. Because of his trials and tribulations, he was given a certificate from Mahatma Gandhi for being the most honest and experienced tea estate owner in South Africa. Today it’s the 3rd largest packaged tea company in India. This their flagship tea that is strong, refreshing and bold. It tastes like nothing you have ever had because it is harvested from small family gardens. It can have different tastes in different regions.

Did you know? Chai is a rich black tea from India made with milk, honey and spices.

Caykur Feliz Cayi – A Turkish black tea born from the efforts of Zihni Derin the “father of Tea” in Turkey who set up research gardens in the 1920s. This is Caykur’s most popular tea because it’s composed of only the most delicate, youngest leaves from the tea plant and contains no additives. Caykur uses the snow and the frost to protect the crops from infestation which means they don’t even use pesticides. This black tea is light and easily drinkable for any occasion.

Did you know? Turkey consumes more tea per capita than any other country in the world.

These are only a few of the thousands of teas that we carry here at Jungle Jim’s International Market. What are some of your favorites?
