    Origins and History

It has been a long struggle for me and Sherry – the venerable fortified wine produced from what is known as the Sherry Triangle (which are the regions Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and El Puerto de Santa María) in the Spanish province of Andalucía. It’s taken me most of my time in this business to come to appreciate, and even enjoy Sherry. Not sure what it was initially.

This part week, we had a visit from Van Duzer, a great producer out of Oregon’s Willamette Valley.  This winery was always a bit difficult to find in my other life across the river, so it’s good to know they are more than within our grasps here in Ohio.

Founded in 1998 in and around the foothills at the mouth of the Van Duzer Corridor (rumor has it the newest AVA in Oregon),

Ever since I participated in a little thing called Road Trip Washington Wine back in 2009, I have had this torrid love affair with the state of Washington.  Whether it was standing atop the hill within Red Willow Vineyard modeled after the La Chapelle Vineyard in the Northern Rhone, the one that is tucked in between Mounts Rainier, Adams and St. Helens, or walking along a dirt road just down from Spring Valley Vineyards near Walla Walla watching little dust devils tear across the fields,

Recently I tried some excellent Burgundy wines from Domaines Albert Bichot.  A family that can trace its lineage back to the early 1200s, their foray into wine began in 1831, from a wine trading business to the winery it has become today.  With holdings in Chablis, Nuits-St.-Georges in the Côte de Nuits , Pommard in the Côte de Beaune, Mercurey in the Côte Chalonnaise and Moulin-à-Vent in Beaujolais, this producer turns out some terrific wines that are pretty affordable (relative to the region).

  • Beer Department: Barrel Aging vs. Barrel Fermenting

The interplay of beer and wood is complex and somewhat daunting to fully grasp. I won’t pretend to be able to cover it all here – for an in-depth exploration of everything you’d ever need to know, I strongly recommend Wood and Beer by Dick Cantwell and Peter Bouckaert. What’s important for our purposes is to know that some styles of beer, by definition, come into contact with wood.  Ambitious brewers today are even exposing beers that traditionally saw no wood whatsoever to wood in the hopes of deriving new flavors, Read article

Dropping by for a quick visit was Delegat, importer of wines from New Zealand and Australia.  We checked out the newest vintages of Oyster Bay and Barossa Valley Estate:

Oyster Bay Chardonnay 2015.  Tart, steely Chardonnay with only the slightest hint of malo.  A great aperitif for those patio parties this summer.

Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2016.  The grapefruit is subtle, dialed down to almost a whisper.  It’s bright and fresh,
