I know, I know.  It’s been 8 years since I went on the Road Trip Washington Wine and I am still going on about it, sue me.  It was a great trip, where I met a lot of really cool people in the industry.  It’s where I met more than a few luminaries in the wine biz, and rekindled my love affair with Washington State wines.

So rewind just a bit to I believe was the Day 3 of the trip, where a host of Yakima Valley producers had gathered for a bit of besotted show-and-tell at Precept Brands’ Canyon Ranch where I came across a winery with a Cincinnati connection: Cote Bonneville.

My laminated name badge bore my name, store and where in the U.S. I was from (Covington, KY) and as I came up to the table helmed by Cote Bonneville winemaker Kerry Shiels, she made a comment her family connection to Cincinnati (Shiels Lumber on the West Side of town), and the conversation went from there.  Since that time, I have been trying to get a distributor to pick them up ever since.

Fast forward to recently and Viola! They are finally here.  I recently tried the wines again, and as I remembered, they are pretty amazing:

Cote Bonneville Riesling Yakima Valley 2016.  A little reminiscent of a Mosel Riesling, there is citrus zest, orchard fruit and hints of spice and mineral in this off-dry white wine.

Cote Bonneville Chardonnay Yakima Valley 2014.  Citrus and tropical fruit leaps from the glass here, buoyed by vanilla cream, butterscotch and caramel undertones, this is a full-bodied, voluptuous Chardonnay that really over-delivers.  Quite seductive.

Cote Bonneville Syrah DuBrul Vineyard 2012.  Remarkable.  Drawing more than a few parallels to Northern Rhone, this dark-fruited, earthy red gives you hints of hints of iodine, duck fat, black pepper, blackberry compote and crushed stones.

Cote Bonneville Carriage House DuBrul Vineyard 2010.  Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.  Rich, full-bodied and densely concentrated with black and red fruit aromas and flavors, hints of cedar, mocha and espresso.  A great Bordeaux-style blend from Washington’s Yakima Valley.

Cote Bonneville Estate Red DuBrul Vineyard 2009.  Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.  This is the wine I remembered back in 2009.  Not sure the vintage I tasted back then, but Wow!  This is extraordinary.  The power and grace of the plush, velvety tannins, the remarkable integration of black and red currants, chocolate, leather and oak spices – one of the elite wines of Washington State.

I feel like it’s my mission to introduce my fellow Ohioans and Kentuckians all the great and as yet-undiscovered (for this market anyway) wineries turning out amazing wines, so I am just doing my due diligence by introducing these magnificent wines with a homegrown connection to all our guests here at JJEG.

You’re welcome.
